The Commons: A K-6 Experiential Learning Public Charter School

We know that children bring their whole selves to school—their bodies, relationships, identities, emotions, interests, and experiences. Academic learning does not happen separately from them.

The Commons, a K-6 tuition-free public experiential learning charter school, is designed around that understanding, with consistent access to rigorous instruction alongside meaningful opportunities to learn through hands-on experience, investigation, and direct engagement with the world beyond the traditional four-walled classroom.

What will make the school different?

  • Rigorous academics, rooted in justice: Strong core instruction connected to experiential learning. Students investigate real community issues, examine evidence, weigh diverse perspectives, question fairness and power, and apply their learning to take action beyond the classroom.

  • Nature and green space: Regular time outdoors to observe, explore, and connect classroom learning to the natural world.

  • Human-animal partnerships: Resident animals integrated into school life, guided at all times by principles of animal welfare, agency, and safety.

  • Whole-child learning conditions: Intentional focus on the physical, social, emotional, and relational conditions children need to feel safe, connected, and ready to learn.

  • A diverse-by-design community: Purposeful recruitment across identity, culture, language, income, and learning needs, with families welcomed as partners in creating a school where everyone belongs and contributes.

Where we are now

Through The Mind Trust’s North Star Fellowship, The Commons is in the early design and community learning stage, with a current focus on Hamden and the greater New Haven area. We are assessing community interest and need, exploring potential sites and partnerships, and building a founding board.

JUSTICE •    LOVE • FLOURISHING

Our mission is to meet students’ academic, cultural, social, and emotional needs through relevant, challenging, experiential, and joyful learning.
